childhood (0-8)

samuel was born in new york city in the midst of the great depression, to two working class parents. twenty-three year old full blood american donna henderson and thirty-one year old first generation italian immigrant ernest costa. sam grew up learning to appreciate what little food was on the table, and to be grateful he could even eat at all.his father was contracted into world war ii as soon as it began, leaving a four year old sam alone with his mother and one-year younger brother benjamin, who sam later on in life annoyingly called benji.thus, young sam grew up under the guise of an absent father figure in his life, never really knowing the man who came to create him. as such, he latched himself onto his mother, enjoying her and his brothers company. his days were relatively happy, sam did well in school and excelled quite well for his age. he was working on math problems three years ahead of his age, a child prodigy in the making his mother said. if only his life remained as simple as it had always been.

youth (9-12)

the carefree innocence of youth would vanish quite fast when ernest costa would return from the war. in 1945, sam met his father for what he felt like was the first time. any previous memories sam had of his father were stories his mother would tell him. and sam quickly learned to wish that those stories remained stories.ernest suffered from deep seated PTSD to which he turned to drinking to cope with. unfortunately, ernest would be a violent drunk, and he would lash out on his loved ones as result. and sam, who wanted nothing more than to please the absent male figure in his life, did everything he could to please his father. and when he failed, he took whatever “punishment” his father handed out believing he “deserved” his wrath. said punishments often left sam unable to sit, or move comfortably for days.the cycle continued to age twelve when sam’s image of his father shattered into pieces before his eyes. he had walked in on his nine year old brother benji being choked to death by their father. as he watched the color drain from benji’s face he knew one thing for certain: we aren't ever going to be good enough. sam completely lost it and yanked the man off him. sam’s leg ended up broken in two places that night. his hopes weren’t the only thing broken.

teenage (13-17)

sam would enter his teens as a shell of a human being. his image of his father shattered and the need to protect his brother intensified, sam would interfere with benjis punishments as often as he could. struggling to be the breadwinner for the family as his father refused to work, he fell behind on his studies, earning one brutal beating after another. but this was alright with sam. as he desperately wished his father could, choke, beat, strangle, the abnormalities out of him. where all the boys at school talked about the “hot” girls, sam would fantasize about the boys making the comments. this among many was a factor in starting to smoke cocaine at age twelve. sam had first picked up a cigarette at age ten.sam’s mother, had become a passing person in his life. she was sort of a show piece that was just there. one who never interfered with the punishments, or tried to soothe the pain away when it was over. gone was the woman sam recalled from his early days of youth, like she never existed. but little did sam know, for donna costa, it was causing her immeasurable heartache to watch the man she loved so much disappear. and it was that deep love she had that kept her there.unfortunately donna was in deep seated denial about her husbands cruelty, believing he was only sick and nothing more. she was oblivious to her children's screams, cries, tears, marks, bruises, none of it meant anything to her. sam remembers watching his mother become more sick with the passing day, drawing further and further and further into herself. eventually, it killed her. sam was fifteen when his mother died of a broken heart on january 11th 1952. donna was thirty-four years old at the time of her passing.a game of cat and mouse were the next years of his life. he and benji would resort to obedience out of fear, and sam became a slave once again to “he’s sick. it’s not his fault. he’s sick. and i have to listen to him.” sam would still be the bread winner of the household, working shit convenience store jobs to pay for his fathers alcohol, and his own drugs to numb the feeling inside his chest. he wanted to be wanted so badly that he purposely sought-after older men, to ruin him inside and out. his innocence was lost in a daze of a coked up high and numbness at age sixteen. he couldn’t even scream “you’re hurting me.” it was flatline affection that didn’t mean much to him.

adolesence (18-27)

as soon as he reached his eighteenth birthday sam took his brother and ran away into the night. they lived out of a darkened alleyway until sam could afford them. the dream had always been school, but with his brother to support, sam sacrificed that dream in order to support them both.sam was twenty when he came home from work to find his eighteen year old brother missing. and unfortunately, he never found him. time was however spent searching, even leading sam back to his family home to an altercation with his father. ernest costa ended up with a broken nose that day, far less than he deserved.no longer having to support his brother, sam was able to enroll in school and take some classes. he could finally set his sights on a career that had promise. graduating at the top of his class at age twenty-four, sam was quickly given a career opportunity at the expense of his school.unfortunately, the company would not see sam for his full potential and just his sexuality. for this, sam was subjected to grunt work he could do in his sleep, and the target of cruel words and behaviors. he tolerated this for three years, letting them walk all over him, as he tried desperately to earn their approval.at the age twenty-seven sam finally called it quits when he was sexually assaulted by his wall street boss, in an attempt to finally get him to quit. sam was angry ashamed, and wanted to prove all those assholes wrong. he was better than them, smarter than them, and would show them all.

adulthood, pre theo (28-42)

the rise and fall (42-45)

in late summer of 77’ sam met theo at an art gallery they were invited to via separate channels. the pair was quickly enamored by each other, secretly hoping they would run into each other again. the next time they met up is when everything really started to fall into place. swept up into a whirlwind romance, they were ready to take on the world.sam's insecurities made their first appearance just over a year into the relationship in early 79’. theo's grandmother had recently passed and shortly after theo moved in with him. having his boyfriend around more often put pressure on sam to be a certain way and act a certain way. to combat his feelings of inadequacy sam proposed a threesome and they welcomed a playwrite named dan into their relationship as a third. this was a short lived two month encounter as sam's feelings of self doubt only grew. it was then that he suggested to theo the idea of an open relationship. sex was sex, but they were always meant to be each others first priority.mere months into sam and theo's open relationship, things took a dark turn when billy died at sam's fire island home. something inside him manifested into a horrible god complex and his drug use would increase as well. sam purchased a new apartment in noho manhattan making it his primary residence rather than his original rose hill address. sam would maintain both residences. in the basement of 17 great jones, sam would build his sex dungeon, keeping it hidden from theo's watchful eyes. sam then continued to circle the drain for the days to come, engaging in exclusively no contact bdsm sexual encounters.as hard as he tried to protect theo from the monster be had become, it all was for not. pretty soon not even theo graves was safe from sam's toxic behaviors that seemed to increase daily.

netflix's wednesday universe based on most of the information from sam's backstory.... sam is a siren who when discovered what his singing could do, killed his abusive father and ran away with his brother. sam attended nevermore "university" going into private accounting before pursing art dealings after the financing industry wasn't enough. sam continued in art until his break up with theo, becoming bored of the work he was doing. he returns to the school that started it all, a professor teaching business.note: this verse can be modified to fit nevermore academy (sam would be a student with dylan sprouse as the fc), however it was born from a group verse based in an alternate school of nevermore university. just let me know how you want to tackle this verse. there are many avenues to explore
